About the Dead Sea

The Dead Sea, the lowest point in the whole wide world (about 400 meter below sea level), is a hyper-saline lake, i.e. it is very, very salty. It is almost ten times saltier than normal seawater and is located on the border between Israel and Jordan. These extreme conditions allow swimmers to float on the lake with great ease and have also given the nearby natural resources special healing qualities (this is why there are so many cosmetic products from the Dead Sea and why so many people come here to treat certain ailments). Visitors love to dip in the sea (be careful though – you don’t want to get the water on your face or in your eyes!) and then cover their bodies with the mud found on the Dead Sea shores.

Dead Sea Hotels and Attractions

Salty shore of the Dead Sea by kudumomo(Flickr)You will find a large group of hotels located on the shore of the Dead Sea, each hotel offering its own beach and a variety of spa treatments, among them the Dead Sea Isrotel Hotel, Hod Hotel and others. The Mineral Beach is popular with visitors and is a favourite “mudding” point and Metzokeh Dragot is another popular beach where laidback travellers set up camp (there is also a nice budget hotel nearby which overlooks the Dead Sae and is also called Metzoke Dragot).

There are many different attractions and places of interest in the nearby area surrounding the Dead Sea. You could take a hike through the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve, tread up the hill to see the famous historic site of Masada or visit the renowned cave of Qumran. Alternatively, you could dip in the hot springs of Hamai Zohar (an especially nice experience during winter) or visit the Ahava Visitors Center, where you can learn about the cosmetic products manufactured by the company.
