The Old City Wall’s Promenade is a lovely way to explore the Old City of Jerusalem, offering wonderful views of the surrounding area and giving you a real feel of the ancient wall
It is possible to take a walk along the Old City Ramparts, enjoying the surrounding views and getting an in depth feel of the ancient walls. The entrance to the Promenade is through the Jaffa Gate and you can choose either to walk the northern strip, leading from the Jaffa Gate to the Lion’s Gate (about one and a half hours), or the southern strip, from the Jaffa Gate to the Dung Gate (about an hour). It isn’t possible to go all the way round the walls, as there is no passage by the Temple Mount. You can stop off at a nearer gate on both walks, if you like, so you don’t have to do the full one and a half hours.
The tour of the walls is independent and tickets may be purchased via the internet or on the spot. There have been complaints about groups of youngsters and fishy local guides harassing lone tourists walking the walls, so it might be a good idea to walk as part of a group.
