The Israeli House of Parliament, located just outside the center of Jerusalem, offers not only a in-depth tour of the building itself and its various functions, but could also include a lovely stroll in the enchanting adjoining Rose Garden
The Knesset
The Israeli House of Parliament, the Knesset, is where the party members elected by the Israeli public discuss and decide upon the future of Israel. Not all visitors will find it especially tempting to visit the core of Israeli politics while in Israel, but those who do will be able to acquaint themselves with the physical surroundings where the future of the State of Israel is decided. Guided tours are available on Sundays and Thursdays in various languages. There are a few strict codes one must maintain, so make sure you take a look at the timetable and guidelines and don’t forget to bring your passport along: Tel: 02-675-3333 The Knesset Website
The Wohl Rose Garden
Outside the Knesset walls, visitors can enjoy a stroll in the Wohl Rose Garden.
The garden is situated between the Knesset and the Supreme Court and has over 15,000 rose shrubs and over 400 different species of roses. Nevertheless, the park is not only about pretty Jerusalemite roses and spacious lawns. Because of its proximity to the Knesset, many demonstrations, hunger strikes and other critical responses to government policy have taken place at this very location. Perhaps due to this interesting mix between pure beauty and raw politics, the garden was awarded the prestigious Award of Garden Excellence by the World Federation of Rose Societies in 2003(www.worldrose.org/awards/gardens/wohl.asp). “It’s good to see Israel in the news for something unrelated to politics or terror” the park’s director was quoted saying in a newspaper article following the publication. Indeed it is. The best time to visit the garden would naturally be spring (April to late May), but it’s very pleasant all year round, even when on the rare occasion when Jerusalem is covered in a blanket of white snow.
